Finishing & Wastewater Treatment Engineer

This position is located in our Montgomery, Alabama location.

Essential Functions
  1. Initiate and lead projects associated with plating, lacquer coating, and anodizing and the tooling and technologies associated with those processes.
  2. Provide technical assistance to ensure that the purchase, storage handling, use and disposal of process related chemicals meets all legal regulations and requirements.
  3. Provide technical support for the wastewater treatment operations to ensure that all legal parameters and requirements are met.
  4. Assist in outside audits of these processes.
  5. Provide technical support for in house lab operations and tests.
  6. Serve as the internal and external point of contact for technical questions regarding plating, lacquer coating, anodizing, and waste treatment operations.
  7. Help create and maintain work instructions for assigned areas.
  8. Provide technical support to ensure that exhaust air is in compliance with all legal regulations and requirements.
  9. Use lean principles to improve the quality of products and processes in assigned areas.
  10. Design process flow for finishing systems and fixtures as needed for process improvements, new products, product modifications, etc.
  11. Manage projects and prepare cost estimates, comparisons, justifications, etc. to be used for capital equipment purchases, make vs. buy decisions, etc.
  12. Analyze product/process data identifying opportunities for improvement and cost reduction.
  13. Plan, develop and lead implementation of process changes that yield improved Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), production efficiencies, yields, and quality.
  14. Work with manufacturing engineering and maintenance on the introduction of new products or the modification of existing products. Provide input on manufacturing feasibility for new and modified products to ensure that lean concepts are used.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Position Qualification Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience and training. Preference for Six Sigma Certification.

Experience: Minimum of five years’ experience leading continuous improvement projects in a manufacturing environment required prior to entry into position. Strong preference for background in plating, anodizing and waste treatment. Experience in applying lean principles including Kanban, Kaizen, and 5s required. CAD or solid works software experience (to create jigs and fixtures for manufacturing). Experience with automation, robotics, and CNC equipment preferred.

Skills/Knowledge: Requires broad knowledge of manufacturing management and control as well as management and supervisory practices along with the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to draw valid conclusions to solve practical problems and deal with situations where only limited standardization exists. Strong computer skills including experience using excel, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, simulation, project management. Hands on approach required.

Physical Activities/Demands: Normal office environment which requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, and see. Light physical work. The employee is required to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, or otherwise move objects.
